FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Got questions? We want to help. Frequently Asked Question – FAQ’s What type of warranty comes with the Pure Light Clean Air Services LLC products? Our air disinfection systems come with a lifetime warranty on parts. Our bulbs come with a 1-year commercial warranty and 2-year residential warranty. Lifetime Warranty of unit must be sent in by a licensed and registered technician during installation. Do you offer a service program? Yes, service program offers annual checkup with bulb replacement every 2 years. Under this service program our system will operate with optimal performance for the life of your HVAC system. Are other services provided for under this service program? Yes, if needed at the time of service, we will change out a customer supplied filter if requested, as well as check the vent discharge temperatures of your A/C to insure current proper operation. We will also check for missing or damaged ducting insulation. As an approved PPN member of TVA we may also recommend some energy efficiency solutions. What is the cost of this service program? The cost is 45 dollars annually with first payment due at installation and then is billed annually. Does a customer need to sign up for the service program? No, it’s just a convenient, reliable, hands- off service program offered to customers. How does PLCAir system UV light kill germs? UV-C light (the frequency used in germicidal UV-C lights) kills germs by disrupting their DNA which prevents them from reproducing, effectively killing them. Is PLCAir system UV light safe for children and pets? Yes, when a UV-C light system is installed properly the germ-killing effect takes place inside the air handler system and is limited to that area. There is no danger to any living thing in the home except germs and odors. Is it OK to look at the PLCAir system UV light when it is energized? No, never look at the UV-C light when it is lit. UV-C light can give your eyes a painful "sunburn". All our systems come with a manual switch and a secondary safety switch that prevents accidental UV-C light exposure. Should the PLCAir system light be on 24 hours a day or only when the blower is on? Yes, these products are intended to be on 24 hours a day. Mold and germ growth doesn't stop when the blower is off. How can we purify the air when the AC or heater isn’t on? Running the air system in "fan" mode will cycle air through the home without turning on the AC or heater. Many programmable thermostats have a setting for this as well. PLCAir system UV-C bulb still glows from “view’ port on the installed system– do I need to replace it after 2 years? Yes, over time the UV-C effectiveness of the lamps decreases even though the lamp is still putting out visible light. Our high-quality, high output system calls for replacing the 60 watt bulb every 2 years for residential and 1 year for most commercial applications. Can the PLCAir system eliminate unpleasant smells? Yes, the PCO grid is part of every residential installation and is specifically designed to fight volatile organic compounds (VOCs) aka bas smells. VOC’s are the source of most household, kitchen, smoke, pets, paint, and chemical odors. Can PLCAir system UV-C damage materials inside the air systems? A properly installed UV-C system will not damage the HVAC system. An improperly installed system may cause damage to filters and other components not rated for UV exposure. Why can other UV-C companies claim there UV-C products don’t harm UV sensitive materials inside the HVAC system? There are many products sold with very low Effective UV-C Energy. A low UV-C Energy bulb when shining directly and continuously on a surface can stop germ growth, but it takes much higher intensity (UV-C) to kill germs – viruses, bacteria, spores, and mold - in the air. If a bulb is too weak to effect UV sensitive material, then it is too weak for Air Disinfection. Is a UV-C system RADIOACTIVE? Will radiation spread, be put into my home? No. All light is a type of radiation but not the dangerous kind. UV light kills germs by giving them an intense “sunburn” and it only affects things it shines on directly. Nothing spreads into the home except clean air. Can you touch the bulbs without causing them harm? Never look directly at, touch, or expose skin close to the UV-C light when energized. These bulbs are high-quality hard quartz and can be handled, they are not the soft quartz found in inexpensive imports (handling soft quartz lamps may cause them to fail). It is recommended to where gloves to prevent oil from hands getting on the bulb. Is it OK to look at the PLCAir system UV-C bulb when energized with glasses or sunglasses? No. Although UV-C light will not pass through plastic or ordinary glass there is still the risk to exposed skin. Always turn off the light or disconnect power to service the system before servicing. Can PLCAir system UV-C reduce radon in the home? No, Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into your home from the ground below. It is not the product of any volatile organic compound (VOC) or biological contaminant so UV-C light has no effect on it. Does PLCAir system UV-C kill kennel cough germs for my pets? Yes, kennel cough is an airborne disease, so UV-C would fight its spread through the air system but would have no effect on its spread by dog to dog contact. Do you know of any veterinarians or boarding facilities that have UV-C in their facilities? Yes! The animal care industry has specific needs and we recommend you contact PetAirapy for all questions and solutions ( Annette@petairapy.com ) Can the PLCAir system UV-C be transferred from my old air handler to a new air handler? Yes, most Pure Light Clean Air UV systems can be moved to a new air system. Does the PLCAir system UV-C produce ozone? No, PLCA (our products) produces no ozone, in fact it removes ozone from the air. Ozone is harmful to lungs. How long does it take for the PLCAir system UV-C to kill mold? The germ-killing effect starts immediately with about 90% of surface microbes sterilized within the first few minutes, and about 99.99% sterilized after the first 24 hours. Does the PLCAir system UV-C remove dust in the air? We have had several customers realize dust reduction. This happens especially in summer where the coil has been optimized and the increased water condensate at the coil acts much like a water filter that traps the dust then flushes dust down the condensate pipe. Is indirect UV-C light dangerous? The effect of UV-C light falls off quickly with distance and when reflected off surfaces. One should always avoid close direct exposure to skin and eyes. Should the PLCAir system UV-C be installed in the supply or return? We recommend installing UV-C units on the supply duct as recommended in the ASHRAE manual, if the supply duct is accessible it is possible to properly place the UV-C system on the return side.
